Local SEO for Shopify Stores: How to Get Found in Your Area

Practical local SEO tactics for Shopify stores: Google Business Profile, local keywords, location pages, structured data, reviews and local link building.

date

Plenty of Shopify stores rank for nothing in their own city. A shop in Glasgow can sell to the whole of the UK, but when someone nearby searches for what it sells, the store is nowhere. Google fills the results with national brands, marketplaces and competitors who simply made local search a priority. If your business has a physical presence, a delivery radius, or a regional audience that matters to you, that invisibility costs real revenue.

Local SEO is how you fix it. It is the set of tactics that help your store appear when people search with local intent, whether that is "near me", a city name, or a postcode. The good news: most Shopify stores ignore this completely, so the work that follows can put you ahead quickly. Here is how we approach it.

Start with your Google Business Profile

If you have a physical location or serve customers in person, your Google Business Profile is the single most important local asset you own. It feeds the map pack, the panel that shows up on the right of branded searches, and a lot of "near me" results. A Shopify store on its own does not give you this. You have to claim and build the profile separately.

Get the basics right and keep them consistent with your website:

Set it up properly through Google Business Profile and treat it as a living listing, not a one-off task.

Target local keywords on the right pages

National keyword strategies miss the searches that convert locally. Someone typing "running shoes Glasgow" or "wedding florist Edinburgh" has clear intent and far less competition than the generic term. Your job is to map those phrases to pages that deserve to rank.

A few rules that keep this from going wrong:

If you are getting visits but no orders, the problem often sits downstream of keywords. We cover that gap in detail in why your Shopify store gets traffic but no sales.

Build location pages that earn their place

If you serve more than one area, dedicated location pages help you rank for each one. Shopify makes these straightforward to add as standard pages. The mistake most stores make is publishing thin, near-identical templates with the place name swapped out. Google sees through that and so do customers.

A location page worth publishing includes genuinely local content: the area you cover, delivery or collection options, local landmarks or context, relevant products, and real detail a customer in that area would care about. Each page should give a reason to exist beyond the keyword. If you cannot write something useful and distinct for a location, you probably should not have a page for it yet.

Ten thin location pages will do less for you than two genuinely useful ones. Local SEO rewards substance, not volume.

Getting the structure and templates right here often overlaps with broader Shopify store improvements and upgrades, since location pages need to fit your theme cleanly rather than fight it.

      Add local structured data

Structured data is code that tells search engines exactly what your business is, where it is, and what you sell. For local SEO, the LocalBusiness schema is the one that matters most. It lets you spell out your name, address, opening hours, geographic area and contact details in a format Google reads directly.

On Shopify you can add this through your theme, a structured data app, or custom code in the relevant templates. Pair LocalBusiness markup with Product and Review schema where appropriate so your listings have the best chance of richer search results. Shopify's own SEO documentation is a sensible starting reference, and the implementation usually sits alongside wider Shopify theme design and development work.

      Collect and manage reviews

Reviews are a ranking factor for local search and one of the strongest trust signals a buyer sees. A steady flow of recent, genuine reviews on your Google Business Profile helps you appear in the map pack and pushes click-through up when you do. We know the weight reviews carry firsthand: our own five-star rating on Clutch, built across 100-plus projects, is one of the first things prospects mention.

        Local link building and backlinks

Backlinks are still one of the strongest signals in Google's ranking system, and for local SEO the most valuable ones often come from your own area. A link from a respected local source tells Google you are a real, established business where you say you are. National stores chasing generic links tend to overlook this, which is exactly why it works.

Practical ways to earn local links and citations:

Consistency matters as much as volume. Conflicting addresses or phone numbers across directories confuse search engines and dilute the benefit, so audit your citations and fix the discrepancies before chasing new links.

          Turn local traffic into sales

Ranking locally is only half the job. The visitors you attract still have to convert, and a store that loads slowly, buries its delivery options, or makes checkout awkward will leak the traffic local SEO worked to win. This is where ranking work and conversion rate optimisation meet, and it is the thinking behind our Conversion Growth Retainer, which treats traffic and conversion as one continuous job rather than two separate projects. If you want the conversion side specifically, our guide to CRO for UK Shopify stores goes deeper.

          The takeaway

Local SEO is not complicated, but it does reward stores that do the unglamorous work properly: a well-kept Google Business Profile, local keywords mapped to real pages, location pages with substance, clean structured data, a steady stream of reviews, and local backlinks earned from your own community. Most Shopify stores skip all of it, which is precisely the opportunity.

We are a Shopify agency based in Glasgow, working with stores since 2014, and we treat local visibility as part of growth rather than a tick-box add-on. If you want to be the store people in your area actually find, get in touch and we will talk through where the quick wins are.
