How Much Does a Shopify Store Cost in the UK?
An honest UK breakdown of Shopify store costs: platform fees, theme vs custom design, apps, agency build ranges and ongoing costs. Realistic GBP figures.
date
The honest answer is: it depends. A Shopify store can cost a few hundred pounds a year if you do it yourself with a stock theme, or well into five figures if you want a custom build from an agency. That range is wide because "a Shopify store" can mean very different things. This is a plain breakdown of what you actually pay in the UK, what drives the numbers up or down, and where the money tends to go.
We have been building on Shopify since 2014 and have delivered 100+ projects from our base in Glasgow, so the figures below reflect real UK quotes rather than US blog estimates converted into pounds.
Platform and subscription costs
Every store pays Shopify a monthly subscription. This is the one fixed, predictable cost. As a rough guide for UK pricing:
On top of the subscription you pay transaction and card processing fees. If you use Shopify Payments, card rates are built in and there is no extra Shopify transaction fee. If you use a third party gateway like PayPal as your main processor, Shopify adds a percentage fee on each sale. For exact current numbers, check the official Shopify pricing page, as plan prices change from time to time.
Most UK SMEs start on Basic or the mid plan. The jump to Advanced or Plus is usually driven by order volume and the savings on card fees, not by features alone.
Design: theme versus custom
Design is where the cost range really opens up, because you are choosing between three broad routes.
Free theme, self-built. Shopify ships with solid free themes like Dawn. If you set it up yourself, your design cost is £0 and your real cost is your time. This is a reasonable starting point for testing an idea.
Premium theme. A paid theme from the Shopify Theme Store is typically a one-off £150 to £300. You get a more polished starting point, but you still have to configure it, write the content and load the products.
Custom or heavily customised design. This is where you get a store that looks like your brand rather than a template. Costs here range widely depending on how much is bespoke. A professionally customised premium theme might be £3,000 to £8,000. A fully custom design and build runs higher. Our Shopify theme design and development work sits in this space, taking a strong theme foundation and shaping it around your brand and your products.
The cheapest store and the most expensive store run on the same platform. The difference in price is almost entirely the design, the build quality and the strategy behind them.Apps and add-ons
Shopify covers the basics, but most stores add apps to extend it: reviews, email marketing, subscriptions, loyalty, advanced search, bundles and so on. Apps are usually monthly subscriptions, and they add up faster than people expect.
A typical small store might run three to six apps and spend £40 to £150 per month on them. Our advice is to start lean. Every app is a recurring cost and a potential point of friction, so add them when there is a clear reason, not just in case.
Agency build costs
If you bring in an agency, you are paying for strategy, design, development, content support and testing, not just a finished page. UK agency build costs vary by scope, but realistic ballpark ranges look like this:
Timelines usually run 4 to 10 weeks depending on scope. The main cost drivers are the amount of custom design, the number of integrations (ERP, 3PL, CRM), data migration, and how many edge cases your catalogue has. Our Shopify website development projects are scoped around exactly these variables, so the quote reflects your store rather than a one-size-fits-all package. If you are coming from another platform, our notes on Shopify migration for UK retailers cover where the extra cost usually hides.
Cheaper quotes exist, and some are fine. Be cautious of quotes that seem far below the rest, as the gap is often made up later in change requests, or in a build that is hard to maintain. You can read more about how to judge a UK partner in our guide to choosing a Shopify agency in Glasgow.
Ongoing costs after launch
Launch is not the finish line. A live store has running costs beyond the Shopify subscription and apps:
Some merchants handle small fixes in-house and call an agency when needed. Others prefer a predictable monthly arrangement, which is what our Shopify support and maintenance service covers. If your priority is growth rather than just keeping the lights on, our Conversion Growth Retainer focuses ongoing budget on testing and improvements that lift revenue. For a sense of what that looks like in practice, see our piece on CRO for UK Shopify stores.
So, what should you budget?
As a rough summary: a self-built store can run from around £300 to £600 in the first year. A professionally customised store from an agency typically lands somewhere between £5,000 and £20,000 to build, plus £100 to £400 per month in ongoing platform, apps and support, depending on scale. Where you sit comes down to how custom you go, how many integrations you need, and how much ongoing growth work you want.
The most useful thing you can do before getting quotes is to be clear on what you actually need now versus what can wait. A good partner will tell you where to spend and where to hold off.
