Mobile Conversion Optimisation for Shopify Stores

Most Shopify stores convert at half the rate on mobile vs desktop. Here's how to close the gap with practical mobile CRO.

date

Your Shopify store probably gets the majority of its traffic from mobile. And if it is like most stores, mobile converts at roughly half the rate of desktop. According to Contentsquare's 2025 Digital Experience Benchmark, desktop ecommerce averages a 3.4% conversion rate. Mobile averages 2.0%. That gap is not a traffic problem. It is a conversion rate optimisation problem, and a solvable one.

The reason most Shopify stores are in this position is simple: stores are built on desktop, tested on desktop, and signed off on desktop. The mobile experience becomes an afterthought. Fixing it is not especially complicated, but it does require looking at the right things in the right order.

The Mobile Traffic and Revenue Gap

Mobile devices account for roughly 75% of global ecommerce traffic but only around 57% of actual sales. On Shopify specifically, mobile can make up 79% or more of sessions. The revenue share tells a different story. That gap between traffic and revenue is what mobile conversion work is about closing.

Cart abandonment data shows where it breaks down. Mobile cart abandonment reached 83.6% in Q3 2024, around 15 percentage points higher than desktop. Those are not shoppers who changed their minds. They are people who hit friction and gave up. If you are seeing this pattern, it is worth reading about why Shopify stores lose sales despite strong traffic.

Site Speed Is the First Place to Look

On mobile, speed is not a nice-to-have. A one-second delay in load time reduces conversions by around 7%. Google's 2024 ecommerce research found that stores with 'Good' Core Web Vitals scores achieve 24% higher mobile conversion rates than stores rated 'Poor'. That is not a marginal difference.

For most Shopify stores, the main culprits are oversized images, third-party app scripts loading on every page, and themes built with more visual complexity than the server can handle efficiently. Our guide to Shopify site speed and Core Web Vitals covers the diagnostic steps in detail. Address speed before touching anything else in your mobile optimisation work.

Design for Where the Thumb Actually Lands

Around 75% of mobile users hold their phone with one hand and navigate with their thumb. That means anything in the top corners of the screen is awkward to reach. Most Shopify themes place the Add to Cart button near the top of the product page. That works on desktop. On mobile, it means the primary call to action disappears the moment a user starts scrolling.

A sticky, fixed-position Add to Cart button keeps the primary action within reach at all times. Published A/B test data from GrowthRock found a sticky variant produced 7.9% more completed orders at 99% statistical significance. It is one of the highest-confidence quick wins in Shopify mobile CRO, and it does not require a full redesign. Many Shopify themes support it natively. If yours does not, it is a small Shopify theme development change.

Simplify the Mobile Checkout

Once a customer reaches checkout, the biggest lever on mobile is removing form fields and payment friction. Shopify's own published data shows Shop Pay converts at 1.72 times the rate of regular checkout. Apple Pay and Google Pay eliminate the card entry form entirely, which matters considerably on a small screen with a touchscreen keyboard.

Enabling every accelerated checkout method available to your market (Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal Express) is free and takes minutes. If you have not done this, do it today. Then look at your checkout analytics to find where mobile users drop off, and work backwards from there. Reducing drop-off at the checkout step is where the biggest recoverable revenue usually sits.

Common Mobile UX Problems Worth Auditing

Beyond speed and checkout, a handful of UX issues appear repeatedly in mobile audits. Not every store has all of them, but most have at least two or three.

Popups and overlays that cover the entire screen on mobile, with no obvious or reachable close targetProduct images sized and cropped for desktop that look cramped or cut off on a phoneNavigation menus built around hover states that behave unpredictably on touch screensFont sizes below 16px that force users to pinch and zoom to read descriptions or reviewsTrust signals (reviews, guarantees, delivery info) buried far below the fold when they should sit near the Add to Cart button

Where to Focus Your Shopify Mobile Optimisation Efforts

If you are starting mobile CRO from scratch, the priority order matters. Speed comes first because a slow site undermines everything else. Checkout friction comes second because that is where the most revenue is lost. UX fixes to the product page and navigation come third.

A useful starting point: go through your own store on a real device, not Chrome's mobile emulator. Add a product to cart, go through checkout, try the search function. Note every moment of friction. Then layer in session recording data from Hotjar or Microsoft Clarity (both free at baseline) to see what real visitors are actually doing.

Most Shopify brands don't have a traffic problem. They have a conversion problem. On mobile, that problem is usually structural, and it shows up in the same places every time.
