Shopify Checkout Optimisation: Reducing Drop-off at the Final Step

Learn how to reduce Shopify checkout abandonment with express payments, fewer form fields, and trust signals that lift your conversion rate.

date

If you're driving decent traffic but revenue has plateaued, Shopify checkout optimisation is usually where the answer lies. Around 70% of shoppers who reach checkout abandon before completing their purchase. That's not a fringe problem, it's the norm across ecommerce.

The good news is that checkout drop-off is largely preventable. Most of the causes are structural: unexpected costs appearing too late, too many form fields, missing express payment options, or not enough trust at the moment customers hand over card details. Fix these and your Shopify checkout conversion improves without spending a penny more on traffic.

Why Checkout Abandonment Costs More Than You Think

Baymard Institute estimates that roughly $260 billion worth of orders are recoverable in the US and EU through better checkout design alone. That figure exists because most checkout drop-off is preventable. Shoppers who reach checkout are warm. They've already chosen a product at a price they're comfortable with. Losing them there is far more expensive than never attracting them in the first place.

Most Shopify brands don't have a traffic problem. They have a conversion problem. And nowhere in the funnel is that more visible, or more fixable, than checkout. As we explored in Why Your Shopify Store Has Traffic but No Sales, the default assumption that more visitors will fix flat revenue is almost always wrong.

Enable Express Checkout Options First

The fastest path from cart to purchase is one where the customer doesn't have to type anything. Shop Pay, Apple Pay, and Google Pay make that possible. A returning customer who can complete a purchase in two taps encounters almost no friction at all.

According to Shopify's own checkout research, Shop Pay converts up to 50% better than standard guest checkout. Across all checkouts, enabling Shop Pay delivers an average 9% lift in conversion. Even for first-time visitors, having these options visible and prominent increases the likelihood of completion.

If you haven't confirmed that all express payment methods are enabled and displayed above the fold on your cart and checkout pages, that's the first thing to fix. It requires no custom development and the conversion uplift can be immediate.

Remove Every Form Field You Don't Need

Every extra field is friction, and friction compounds. Title, company name, a second address line, a phone number that serves no operational purpose. Individually, these don't feel like much. Collectively, they make checkout feel like form-filling, which is exactly the energy you're trying to avoid.

Shopify's one-page checkout, which became the default from 2024, consolidates the process significantly. But you still need to audit which fields you're actually requiring. Set phone number to optional unless you genuinely need it for delivery coordination. Remove anything you don't use downstream. Every field you cut is a small piece of friction gone.

Place Trust Signals Directly at the Payment Step

Baymard's 2024 checkout usability research found that 17% of shoppers abandoned specifically because they didn't trust the site with their card details. That's not scepticism about your product. It's about whether the checkout page feels safe enough to hand over payment information.

Trust signals work best at the moment of financial commitment, not on the homepage. A clear SSL indicator, a concise money-back guarantee, and recognisable payment logos placed near the pay button all reduce perceived risk at exactly the right point. You don't need to overload the page. One or two well-placed signals outperform a cluster of badges.

Trust signals work when they appear at the moment of financial commitment. A guarantee at checkout performs far better than the same guarantee buried on your about page.

Stop Forcing Account Creation Before Purchase

Around 26% of shoppers abandon checkout because they're asked to create an account first. This is one of the oldest self-inflicted conversion problems in ecommerce, and plenty of stores are still doing it.

Allow guest checkout without friction. If you want customers to create accounts, for loyalty programmes or repeat purchase convenience, offer it on the order confirmation page - when they already have a reason to bother. Don't make it a condition of buying.

Surface Shipping Costs Before Checkout

48% of shoppers who abandon at checkout do so because of costs that weren't visible earlier, usually shipping. The checkout page shouldn't be where customers discover a delivery fee for the first time. Show shipping estimates on the product page or in the cart, and be upfront about minimum order thresholds for free delivery.

This is partly a theme and UX problem. The right Shopify theme design and development approach makes shipping transparency a default, not an afterthought. If your store reveals costs at the final step, you'll keep losing orders there regardless of how well everything else is optimised.

Measure Where Customers Are Actually Dropping Off

Before making changes, establish where in checkout customers are actually leaving. Shopify's native checkout analytics shows completion rates by step. Pair that with a session recording tool such as Hotjar or Microsoft Clarity and you'll see quickly whether abandonment is happening at the shipping step, the payment step, or somewhere in between.

If you're evaluating who to work with, choosing the right Shopify CRO agency matters more than most store owners expect. A good agency starts with diagnostic work, not recommendations. Changes grounded in actual session data hold. Changes based on guesswork don't.

Checkout optimisation is some of the highest-return work you can do on a Shopify store, because the customers who reach it already want to buy. A few structural changes (express payments, trimmed fields, visible trust signals, honest upfront shipping costs) can recover a meaningful share of those lost orders without any additional ad spend.
